How students and staff work together and support one another is what makes Greenwood a special community. This important facet of our school culture has been evident on several different occasions in the past few weeks.
Last week’s performances of The Little Mermaid exemplified our strong sense of community. After seeing Thursday’s show, I was most impressed by the level of energy and fun students brought to their roles, and by how well the cast, crew and musicians from a wide range of grades worked together. Such strong teamwork is the result of many hours of dedicated practice and strong leadership. My congratulations to the 50 students who dedicated their time and energy to the play, and to staff members Emily Hincks, Rachael Brownell-Swain, Ben Wright and Rebecca Stewart in motivating these students to work together.
A similar sense of community was evident in the recent Fall Outdoor Education reunion event, which involved students in Grades 12, 8 and 7. Getting to know the younger students better has been one of the goals of this year’s Leaving Class, so it was gratifying to see them dedicate some of their time after school to organize a massive game of Clue for the younger students and to share some pizza with them. They plan to follow up this event with something similar later this year.
The strong sense of community continues after students graduate from Greenwood. For a number of years, our teachers and staff have travelled to various universities to meet with Greenwood alumni. This fall teachers visited Queen’s, McGill, Acadia, Dalhousie, Western, and Laurier, where they met with 110 Greenwood alumni. Our grads are always interested in hearing the latest news about Greenwood and we love hearing about how they are moving forward with their postsecondary journey. As we approach the end of the first term, I am proud of the way in which all members of our community continue to work together.
