The Blessings of Giving
At our October 9 assembly, Principal Hardy touched on two examples of how giving at Greenwood blesses both the giver and the recipient.

On October 5, the newly expanded Leaside Memorial Gardens officially opened its second ice pad. Greenwood hockey teams have played and practiced at Leaside since the founding of the hockey program, which is why the school donated to the project to help make it a reality.
“The second rink will be wonderful for the community,” Principal Hardy said. “It means more ice time for figure skaters, recreational skaters, and hockey players, and it means Leaside’s neighbours have access to a state-of-the-art facility.
“For Greenwood, the new rink means better game times and better practice times for our hockey teams. In recognition of our donation, Greenwood’s logo also appears on the second rink’s scoreboard. By supporting the expansion, both we and the arena have seen, and will continue to see, positive change.”
Our Wednesday morning Service Learning program is another example of how the recipient isn’t the only person who benefits from giving.
“When you teach someone to play guitar, or when you make sandwiches for an emergency youth shelter, you are giving to someone. But you are also learning. You’re learning about yourself, and about empathy; you’re learning about the broad horizons of our city; and you’re learning that not everyone has the opportunities that we do.
“As always, I’m very proud of you all for doing what you do here at Greenwood,” Principal Hardy said. “You give because you want to, not because you have to, and that is what makes giving to others a lifelong habit.”
