Greenwood Students Impress at DECA Provincials

Ryan Vachon, Subject Team Leader, Business
A record number of Greenwood students represented the school at provincial business case competition.
Congratulations to the Greenwood students who represented the school at the recent DECA Provincials.

DECA is a written and oral business case competition where students demonstrate their proficiency in communication and strategy in a variety of categories which include: marketing; business management and administration; hospitality and tourism; finance; entrepreneurship and personal financial literacy.

More than 1,000 students participated from schools across the province. A record high 24 Greenwood students qualified for the competition at the regional DECA in November 2023

Throughout DECA Provincials week, participating students wrote multiple choice tests to assess their business acumen and knowledge within their categories. In addition, students delivered Oral Event Presentations; these solutions to case studies were delivered on-the-spot to DECA judges.

Two Greenwood students were recognized at the Provincial Awards ceremonies as Top 20, narrowly missing representing Canada at DECA International. Please join us in congratulating Aubrey Campbell ‘24 and Dillon Browning Rodriguez!

Aubrey used years of experience in DECA (including being one of Greenwood's DECA Executives this year) as well as her personal experience of working at Toronto's historic restaurant The Old Spaghetti Factory to earn some of Ontario's highest scores in the Restaurant and Food Management Series.

Dillon spent the evenings leading up to the competition practising archived DECA cases and seeking additional feedback prior to earning the highest cumulative Provincials score in Greenwood's history. Dillon competed in the category of Principles of Business Management.

Well done to all Greenwood DECA students for their engagement and participation this year.

A special thanks to this year's student executives: Aubrey Campbell ‘24, Jake Grevler ‘24, Matthew Hicks ‘25, Izzy McEvily ‘24, & Julia Morris ‘24, and the Junior Execs Steph Georgopoulos ‘26 and Ted Hollend ‘26. These Execs planned one or two weekly DECA meetings since the start of the year, designed a program to prepare DECA students for success, and served as positive role models. In particular, thanks go to Julia Morris who has been a DECA Executive for three years, including the past two as DECA President. Julia helped steer Greenwood's DECA program through COVID-19 and has led DECA through a doubling of its club size and a 50 per cent increase in its qualification rate for DECA Provincials. We wish her and all other graduating DECA students the best in their postsecondary journeys.
