Outdoor Education: The Trip Report Series

This summer, four Greenwood students took on a 50-day canoe trip. In the first installment of our new OE Trip Report series, they shared their experiences - both fun and challenging - with fellow students.
Eva Pestrin, Eton Carrington, Tim Mulligan, and Gabriel Loubert - all currently in Grade 11 - were campers at Camp Wapomeo and Camp Ahmek, brother and sister camps in Algonquin Park. The 50-day trip is the most ambitious offered by the camps, but our students were up to the challenge.

Grade 9 and 10 girls went to Eva’s presentation, while Grade 9 and 10 boys listened to the presentation by Eton, Tim and Gabriel. Grade 11 and 12 students attended either presentation. Both groups went over the highs - including being fully in tune with nature and letting go of daily anxieties - and the lows, many of which were food-related. “I quickly realized I’m not a huge fan of quinoa,” one student said. "We had it seven times and we never did figure out how to cook it properly." There was also significant physical challenge on the trip, including an 11km portage and a 20km paddle up Crooked Lake in a headwind.

Grade 7 and 8 students headed to the theatre to hear from Nancy Lang, a past Greenwood parent and the producer of West Wind: The Vision of Tom Thomson. Nancy showed students excerpts from the film, providing some background about Tom’s life and work and explaining the rationale behind many of the film’s creative choices.

Thank you to our Outdoor Education committee for organizing a great round of trip reports!
