On Saturday, November 3, the fall athletic season came to a close with several Greenwood teams in competition around the GTA. Competing across 4 sports, divided further into 13 teams supported by 25 coaches, a total of 196 Greenwood students represented the Grizzlies this season. With one CISAA championship, multiple playoff appearances and several OFSAA qualifiers, this was another successful season for Greenwood with some memorable performances and many examples of individual and team growth.

The cross-country team achieved a great deal of success as the U15 Boys finished second in the CISAA and qualified as a team for OFSAA. Robyn Perry finished second among Senior Girls at the CISAA championships and also qualified for OFSAA, as did Anne Farr, who qualified with an eighth-place finish in the Junior Girls CISAA championship. At the OFSAA championships, hosted at the Christie Lake Conservation Area outside of Hamilton, the runners all enjoyed strong performances at the provincial level and were excellent representatives for their school.

The girls' basketball program also enjoyed an excellent season, particularly at the U14 level, where Greenwood's team moved up to compete in Division 1. Despite competing against some far bigger schools, this team went unbeaten in the regular season, making it all the way to the finals where they lost a close-fought game to Crestwood Prep to finish second in the CISAA. The junior girls also qualified for the playoffs and the senior team demonstrated tremendous growth, both individually and as a team, and particularly enjoyed having Lub join Ms. Lieberman on the coaching staff.

In boys' volleyball, the U14 boys' team claimed Greenwood's only CISAA championship of the season, defeating Sterling Hall & UCC at the final four championships, hosted by Bayview Glen. Both the junior & senior boys' teams also enjoyed strong seasons, qualifying for the playoffs but losing at the semi-final stage in their respective divisions.

On the soccer fields, the junior boys' team enjoyed the strongest regular season of any Greenwood team, going 5-0 to qualify for the playoffs, where they lost a tough semi-final to eventual champions Trinity College School. The U14 boys also qualified for the playoffs, losing in the quarter-finals at Ridley College, despite putting in their best performance of the season. The senior boys' team, in a tough division, narrowly missed out on a playoff spot but thoroughly enjoyed their season with Mr. Sargento & Ms. Foster at the helm.

The girls' soccer program also had its share of highlights. Following on from their Division 2 championship last year, the U15 team decided to move up to challenge themselves at the Division 1 level. They competed in a number of close-fought games and ultimately lost to Hillfield Strathallan in a thrilling 5-3 quarter-final. The senior girls' team competed in a very close Division 2, where they made the semi-finals before losing to eventual champions Holy Trinity. Perhaps their biggest highlight was their participation at the national CAIS tournament, where they put forth a series of excellent performances, only losing in overtime at the semi-final stage.

Reflecting on this first athletic season, as always, it was great to see so many students, old and new alike, participating on a school team. With the first practices and try-outs for our winter teams beginning after the Fall break, we're already excited for the next season and the remainder of the year. Go Grizzlies!
