Track and Field: Success at CISAA and OFSAA

Greenwood’s Junior and Season Track and Field teams gave it their all at the CISAA meets and OFSAA, and ended their seasons with some stellar results.

Twelve Junior track team members competed in the CISAA track meet from May 22 - 25. They each participated in a number of different events. There were a number of highlights from the meet. The U14 Girls 4x100m relay team pushed hard to finish in third place, while Sabine Moysey and Leila Shapiro placed in the top eight for U14 Girls Hurdles. Charley Young managed to place in the top ten for all his events: high jump, shot put, and 200m dash.

The Senior Track and Field team also had a strong showing. A small but mighty group of six dedicated members, many achieved personal bests at the CISAA meet. Five of these athletes qualified for the Toronto Metros based on their performance at the CISAA meet: Alison White, Jessica Tinney, Caitlin Barnett, Alex Sterling, and Robyn Perry.

The competition at the Toronto Metros was fierce. Athletes from all over Toronto compete for the chance to move on to OFSAA; only the top four competitors in each event qualify. Two Greenwood athletes — Jessica Tinney and Alison White — earned a spot in OFSAA in their respective events: Seated Shot Put and Wheelchair 200m for Jessica and the Open Girls 1500m Steeplechase for Alison.

Alison White had an excellent final race, finishing in 5th for the province. Alison has qualified for OFSAA every one of her high school years in Track and Field and Cross Country; she has truly earned her place among Ontario’s elite high school athletes.

Jessica Tinney competed in two OFSAA events: the Girls Wheelchair 200m and the Girls Seated Shot Put. Though she has only competed in seated shot put a handful of times, she managed to win gold and break an OFSAA record. This is the third OFSAA record that she has broken in her high school career; she also holds the record for 200m and 400m wheelchair racing.

Since she first started competing in wheelchair racing in Grade 9, she has been a strong competitor and the OFSAA meet was no exception. A strong headwind prevented her from breaking her own record, but she managed to snag another OFSAA gold. That win brings her total OFSAA gold medal count up to seven during her time at Greenwood. Jessica will also be representing Canada this August at the CP World Games in Spain.
