I spoke about the meaning behind "venturing further" and how when we push ourselves outside of our comfort zones, we can accomplish things we never thought possible.
In the short story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” the titular character lives a rather ordinary, humdrum life, but constantly imagines exciting adventures. The 2013 film adaptation of this story expands upon this premise. To retrieve an important photograph, the protagonist ends up actually going on an adventure, pushing himself to do things he never normally do.
The idea behind this version of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is the same principle that informs student growth at Greenwood. When you move beyond your comfort zone, that is where the magic happens. It is where you find out more about yourself, where you learn and grow.
You don’t always have to go on huge adventures to push yourself further. As we begin the final term, ask yourself: “What can I do over the next few months that will push me to discover new things in and outside of class?”
That’s what “Venture Further” means: we are all capable of pushing ourselves to learn and grow.
