The opportunity to step out of the classroom and experience the world of PR through my incredible co-op placement at Strategic Objectives, Canada’s most award-winning PR agency, was incredibly valuable for my career. Learning about PR in school is one thing, but actually experiencing the fast-paced, collaborative and fun environment that Strategic Objectives exudes is what sparked my passion for PR. I got to see the day-to-day routine of typical PR personnel and I saw myself in that role.
During my year-long placement, I was given a number of incredible opportunities to represent and promote various clients at trade shows, communicate with top-tier television and print media and help out with the planning and execution of client events. These experiences not only helped me develop critical PR skills but also helped me realize that I can do whatever I set my mind to. I also worked on a team of dedicated and hard-working PR professionals who were always happy to share their expertise and advice. Co-op students should really take advantage of this, especially when considering which programs and universities are going to help them find their dream career.
Gaining real-life work experience in an industry of interest really motivated me to work hard during my university career and to take advantage of the connections I made during my co-op at Strategic Objectives. If there is one piece of advice I could give from my experience as a co-op student, it is to preserve those connections. I maintained my relationship with Strategic Objectives throughout my university career and gained three summer internships because of it.
If I told my Grade 11 self that I would be working at my co-op placement five years later, I wouldn’t have believed it. I am so proud to have achieved my goal of becoming an account coordinator at Strategic Objectives and could not have done it without the Greenwood co-op program.
