Eric Walters Comes to Greenwood

By Estella Lamarche-Dykeman ('19)

On Friday, January 17, the Grade 7 and 8 students of Greenwood College School had the great pleasure of watching a great presentation by Eric Walters.

Eric started out by telling us a little bit about himself. He began writing in 1993 for his Grade 5 class of reluctant readers in Streetsville, Mississauga, at Vista Heights Public School. He has a charity, The Creation of Hope, along with an orphanage in Kenya.

Eric Walters has done many amazing things. He has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, trekked across the Sahara Desert and met famous Toronto graffiti artist, Dead Boy. His many experiences have inspired all of the 92 books he has written. These books include: Just Deserts, Between Heaven and Earth, Alexandria of Africa and many more. On the topic of the book Just Deserts, Mr. Walters said, “this book is about a boy who is lost in the Sahara Desert...I wrote it while I was lost in the Sahara Desert!” He showed us many pictures of his adventures and inspirations for his novels.

My classmates and I were very impressed with Mr. Walters' experiences and his kindness and desire for impact in the world. The Grade 7 students are reading Eric Walters novels for novel studies, and it was wonderful to get to meet him and have our novels signed. It was especially cool for me to meet Eric Walters because my dad grew up in Streetsville and went to the elementary school that Mr. Walters taught at.

All in all, this was a really great experience for the Grade 7 and 8 students. I think that experiences like this one are part of what make Greenwood College School so special.
