Queen's Park Co-Op Student Gets Audience with NDP Leader
Micah Laskin ('14), who completed a co-op placement at with the ONDP at Queen's Park this year, capped off his experience with an opportunity to talk with ONDP Leader Andrea Horwath.
This year, I had the exceptional opportunity to participate in a student co-op placement with the Ontario New Democratic Party (ONDP) at Queen’s Park. I was immersed in politics all year long and learned a tremendous amount about the political process in this province. I feel better able to appreciate the importance of decisions that are made by all of the political parties as they try to improve the quality of life for everyone in Ontario. While at Queen’s Park, I set up and watched press conferences, assisted in the planning of events, conducted outreach and research and had many opportunities to talk with really intelligent staff members about emerging issues.
One of the more memorable opportunities for me actually occurred on my last co-op day. I watched a press conference where Andrea Horwath addressed the press and then answered their questions on the budget. I then had the privilege to sit and talk with Andrea, the Leader of the ONDP, in her office. This was a really enjoyable opportunity to meet and talk to a leader of a political party. We spoke about my experience in this co-op placement, my future plans for university and continuing my work with the ONDP in the future. She was incredibly kind to me and was very focused on our conversation. She offered me some interesting perspectives on the things that we talked about. Regardless of your political leanings, I expect it will be clear to anyone who meets her that she is very committed to improving the quality of life for all Ontarians. I hope to stay involved in that kind of work as well and expect I will stay interested also in the ways that politics can affect our lives.
