Lulu Tanenbaum ('13) describes the factors motivating her to help plan our Women's Awareness Week this December.
The planning process for Women's Awareness Week began at the end of September, when I came to the Community Service Committee with a proposal. A group of students and I had been working with the North York Women's Shelter (NYWS) for over 4 years, and we wanted to have a fundraiser for this incredible organization. All the funds that were raised would go towards a gift for the women and children at NYWS.
The committee loved the idea and the charity, but we wanted to find other ways to educate the Greenwood community about violence towards women and gender equality. Nicole Toole had worked on a real change video project about gender equality, and we wanted to show it to the school. After many ideas about what to do, we came up with a plan for an assembly. We would speak about the issue, show one of the videos, and have Jeff Perera from the White Ribbon Campaign come to speak to us.
This assembly, held on Monday, December 3, was a strong kick-off to the week. Throughout the week we sold white ribbons to increase awareness about violence against women. On Wednesday, December 5, there was a women's week coffee house, which was very successful show.
December 6 marks the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, which is held on the anniversary date of 1989’s Montreal Massacre. On this day, we asked all students to wear a white accessory with their uniform, and asked them to take a moment to remember the 14 women who lost their lives on that day.
Our fundraising goal for the week was $600, and we successfully passed that goal. I would like to thank everyone involved and everyone who supported Women's Awareness Week.
