Community Service
Our community commitment extends far beyond the grounds of the school. Instilling the spirit of giving back locally and internationally is fundamental to our philosophy. We emphasize community projects, whether they are around the corner or around the world, so that students can experience the personal growth and reward inherent in helping others less fortunate. Past and ongoing community involvement includes:
- Rebuilding a school in Sri Lanka
- Collecting 4,000 pounds of food for Toronto-area food banks
- Helping out with the Don River clean up
- Reading Buddies program in Regent Park
- Participating in the Horizons program, providing tutoring and mentoring for inner-city students
- Working with autistic and ESL students at Toronto-area schools
All students participate in community service projects as a core component of their school life. Grade 7s and 8s perform their community service close to home during co-curricular periods, while Grade 9 – 12s become increasingly global in their sense of community responsibility, becoming involved in charitable organizations across the city and around the world.
Our goal is that students come to appreciate the value of participatory giving rather than obligatory giving–they give because they want to, not because they have to. As such, while all students in Ontario must acquire at least 40 hours of service to graduate from high school, Greenwood students can proudly claim many hours beyond that minimum.
