What happens when you open the doors of Greenwood?

Breathe in the Greenwood spirit. To your left, a group of students is blocking an upcoming theatre production on the stage. Behind them, a Grade 8 student takes her first tentative steps onto the climbing wall that towers three stories to the rafters. Over in the corner, a group of faculty is checking equipment lists with students for an upcoming kayaking trip to BC. Welcome to The Lodge — the gathering place for the Greenwood community, the starting point for all manner of events, trips and activities and the symbolic heart of all things Greenwood.

If you venture a little further, you’ll hear symphonic music wafting down the halls and the thump and screech of rubber soles on polished wood. Every student, no matter where his or her talents lie, participates actively in the communal life of the school and makes a unique contribution to Greenwood. It is this spirit of community — tangible and alive to the Greenwood family in so many ways — that makes Greenwood unique.

At the beginning of each year, students, staff and faculty spend two weeks together offsite, either at camp or on an expedition. During this time away from the traditional school setting, vital bonds and relationships form the foundation for the community spirit of Greenwood College School.

This spirit is not limited to campus — students participate in regular community service projects across the city and around the world. David “Lub” Latimer, our Director of Community Life and a founder of Greenwood, is charged with the responsibility of nurturing Greenwood’s spirit of community every day through the school’s house system, service projects and day-to-day interactions among students, faculty and staff.
