Academics

Thankfully, no two students are alike. And while this fact is often overlooked in the traditional classroom, this learning philosophy lies at the very heart of how instruction is delivered at Greenwood.

A unit on the American Civil War, for example, could incorporate a wide array of learning activities, depending on the student. One student might create a PowerPoint presentation on the economics of the

cotton trade in the mid-19th century, while another sketches Civil War era military uniforms and another presents a book report on literature set in the period. Students learn by sharing their unique findings and exchanging ideas.

Our focus on differentiated learning stresses that who is being taught is equally as important as what is being taught. It acknowledges that an auditory learner absorbs information differently than a visual learner. And it takes into account that personal experiences and individual interest will shape how individual students respond to a particular subject. Learn more about Greenwood’s innovative Student Success Centre, where students have the opportunity to explore and be challenged according to their own unique learning styles.

Greenwood’s commitment to differentiated learning dictates a continuous process of assessment and adjustment in the way the curriculum is delivered to each student. We keep the student/teacher ratio low, and offer Educational Interns in many classes, to ensure that lessons cater to the unique learning styles of all students, making the learning process fun, challenging and fulfilling.
