Governance

The school is non-denominational, welcoming students of all backgrounds and beliefs. Greenwood’s 12-member Board of Directors operates at arms length from the school and oversees the school’s vision, policies, finances and the appointment and ongoing evaluation of the Principal.

Two of the founders, Richard Wernham and Julia West, provided start-up funding for Greenwood. Tuition fees and donations cover the school’s annual operating costs. Philanthropic giving also provides additional support for the school’s capital costs, debt retirement and the establishment of its endowment. As a charity registered with the Canada Revenue Agency, the school distributes tax receipts for donations and has established a separate foundation to oversee the management of the school’s endowment.

Greenwood is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the North American Young Round Square organization. Several members of Greenwood’s senior administration have performed independent school audits with the Canadian Educational Standards Institute (CESI).

In November 2006, Greenwood was granted full membership with the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario (CIS).
